Millstream began over 30 years ago in Seattle when Roger Fredericksen, a school teacher, discovered a store on Mercer Island featuring hand-carved and painted decoy birds. Inspired by his childhood interest in carving, Roger began making wood decoys and, after connecting with local artists and artisans, decided that Seattle needed a special store to celebrate the art and beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

In March 2020, Roger chose to retire, and the store briefly closed due to the disruptions of COVID-19. Derek and his partner Michael, both longtime Islanders and admirers of Roger’s work, were determined to preserve this special place. They reopened Millstream Bainbridge in July 2020 with a focus on continuing Roger’s legacy.

Our goal is to offer unique and beautiful works of art from local artists that highlight the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. You’ll always find pieces that celebrate the trees, animals, and landscapes of Bainbridge Island and beyond. As Roger once shared, 'When you hear the birds, it means everything is and will be okay.
